January came to a close and February 2026 arrived with a deep freeze here in the Texas Hill Country. We had originally planned a trip to visit family in Illinois, but instead found ourselves tending to winterizing projects around the property. Once everything was secured, we embraced the slower pace—resting, sitting by the fireplace, watching classic movies, and enjoying a stack of wonderful books.
I often find myself returning to beloved classics like James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small, along with favorites from authors Jan Karon and Karen Kingsbury. Having just finished their newest releases—My Beloved and The Christmas Ring—I was eager for more uplifting reads. A dear friend recommended Theo of Golden by Allen Levi, which became the first book of our short winter hibernation. It was a refreshing and beautifully written story that reminded me how one person can profoundly impact a community simply by encouraging others one life at a time.
I followed that with The Great Blue Hills of God by Kreis Beall, one of the founders of Blackberry Farm. Years ago, while building the Inn, we had the opportunity to visit this extraordinary resort during a trip to the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. The thoughtful details of their farm—and many special moments we’ve gathered in our travels—have inspired how we built and continue to grow the Inn at Sunset Mill Ranch. We are always grateful when guests share their appreciation for the hospitality and attention to detail they experience here.
As many hardworking entrepreneurs understand, building a meaningful business requires dedication and sacrifice. We’re drawn to the stories behind those journeys, which is why Kreis Beall’s reflections resonated so deeply. Her honest sharing—both joyful and heartbreaking—felt especially timely. Taking time these past months to read, reflect, and reset has helped us ensure our priorities are aligned as we plan and set goals for the year ahead.
With hints of spring already in the air—cool, crisp mornings giving way to sunny afternoons—we’ve been inspired to tackle outdoor projects around the greenhouse, garden, barn, and outbuildings. Lynn is looking forward to a few fly-fishing outings while the weather remains cool and the hatches begin along the Guadalupe River. Meanwhile, Diana has been testing new recipes she’s excited to share with guests in the coming months.
We’ve also been spending extra time on the porch—savoring morning coffee, playing with Bailey, and capturing the stunning sunsets in the evenings. Bailey is now five months old and has doubled in size since we brought her home in October. At 15 pounds, she’s full of energy and rarely without a toy. A friend recently laughed that our back porch looks like a nursery, complete with puppy fencing and toys scattered everywhere for chewing and fetching at a moment’s notice.
