We hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day! May always brings thoughts of warmer temperatures, spring flowers, and gathering with family and friends for good food, laughter, and special memories.
This Mother’s Day, we especially missed Diana’s sweet mom, but we are so thankful for the many precious memories and celebrations we shared with her over the years. We are also grateful that Lynn’s dear parents are still with us and that we will soon get to spend time with them. Lynn’s mom welcomed me into the family when we were just high school sweethearts, and she has truly been like a second mother ever since.
Thinking about our moms also reminds us of all the special women in our lives — grandmothers, sisters, aunts, nieces, and dear friends who feel like family. We are thankful for mothers who sacrificed for us, nurtured and taught us, prayed for us, and loved us unconditionally. We remember grandmothers and aunts who made us feel so special with warm hugs and delicious homemade treats, and sisters who made childhood sweeter simply by being by our side.
You have arrived…
And to our family and friends who have shared the gift of your children and grandchildren — our precious nieces and nephews — thank you for the joy and blessings they continue to bring into our lives.
As we prepared for the arrival of guests this week, I found myself reflecting on how our grandmothers must have prepared for family visits — baking pies and cakes, making homemade ice cream, and filling their homes with warmth and comfort. I can still remember the smell of freshly brewed iced tea, baked goods cooling in the kitchen, fresh line-dried linens, and cozy quilts waiting on the beds. Their homes always felt welcoming, with counters and refrigerators overflowing with treats and hospitality.
We hope that when you arrive at the Inn at Sunset Mill Ranch, you experience that same feeling of warmth and welcome.
Let your senses wander…
As you come through the gate, we hope you’ll roll down your windows, take a deep breath, and enjoy the wonderful smells of the country while watching for birds, wildlife, and cows along the winding driveway. Take in the breathtaking views as you make your way to the breakfast room to check in, where freshly baked goods, snacks, drinks, coffee, tea, and perhaps even a glass of wine await you on the old farm table and in the refrigerator.
And the moment you step from your porch into your private room or cabin, we hope the fresh linens, soft blankets, cozy quilts, and relaxed yet luxurious décor help you immediately unwind and settle into a restful, memory-making stay.
Spring has been especially beautiful this year. The cool mornings and evenings make extra time on the porch even more enjoyable. The birds throughout the property are plentiful, and their singing and calling remind us that they, too, are enjoying the season.
We often hear — and sometimes see — wild turkeys in the mornings and evenings from our back porch. The Purple Martins and bluebirds have returned and are settling into the newly erected birdhouses for the season. Black-bellied Whistling Ducks are nesting in trees around the property, adding even more charm to springtime at the ranch.
Daily visitors to our feeders include Painted Buntings, Summer Tanagers, Cardinals, and many other colorful birds. We’ve also enjoyed a few rare sightings of Indigo Buntings, Rose-breasted and Blue Grosbeaks, Cedar Waxwings, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Ash-throated Flycatchers.
Lynn recently gifted me a Bird Buddy hummingbird feeder that we hung where we can watch from our porch. It has been amazing to capture the incredible detail and beauty of these tiny, fast-moving creatures on camera.
