Planning a weekend in the Texas Hill Country starts with one question. What will you do with your time? Some travelers plan every hour. Others arrive ready to slow down. This itinerary fits both.

Before opening the Inn, we spent years exploring Wimberley on weekend trips from north Houston. Those visits shaped the recommendations below. You get a clear plan with room to relax.

If you’re looking for inspiration, here’s one of our favorite ways to spend a weekend in the Wimberley area.

Day 1: Arrival & Unwinding in Wimberley

Start your getaway by heading toward the beautiful Texas Hill Country, taking your time along the way. Stop in a few of the small towns you pass through. Grab a coffee, browse antique shops, and enjoy the slower pace.

Arrive in charming Wimberley around lunchtime and enjoy dining outdoors at one of the local favorites. Guests especially love:

After lunch, stroll around the Square. Browse art galleries, explore boutiques, and maybe stop for a coffee or a wine tasting. It’s the perfect way to ease into the weekend.

By mid-afternoon, make the short drive out to the Inn at Sunset Mill Ranch. Once you arrive, settle in with a fresh cup of coffee and one of our homemade treats waiting in the breakfast room. Then take some time to relax, whether that’s stretching out in your room, rocking on the porch, or simply soaking in the wide-open Hill Country views.

If you’re feeling adventurous, take a leisurely walk around our 25 acres. You might spot wildlife, wander past the garden, or follow along the spring-fed creek as it winds through the property.

As evening approaches, pour a glass of wine and find your favorite spot on the porch or deck. The sunsets here are truly something special. Watch as the sky shifts through layers of color across the valley. Don’t forget your camera.

Evening: Dining & Small-Town Charm

For dinner, Wimberley offers plenty of wonderful options. A few guest favorites include:

  • Creekhouse Kitchen & Bar for great food and creekside views
  • Marco’s Italian Restaurant for hearty, homemade Italian dishes

After dinner, enjoy live music and a relaxed atmosphere at Social on the Square or one of the nearby local spots.

When you return to the Inn, the evening is yours. Enjoy dessert or a nightcap, then unwind in the hot tub, gather around the firepit, or simply sit under the stars. With minimal light pollution, the night sky often puts on a show of its own.

Then settle in for a peaceful night’s sleep on luxurious linens in your king bed.

Day 2: Exploring the Hill Country

Start your morning slowly with a fresh cup of coffee on your private porch or deck, followed by a homemade, farm-to-table breakfast in the dining room. Each morning includes a sweet baked treat, a savory egg dish, potatoes, bacon or sausage, fresh fruit, and juices.

After breakfast, you have a full day to explore.

Nature lovers may enjoy:

  • A visit to Blue Hole Regional Park
  • A stop at Jacob’s Well (reservations recommended)
  • Climbing Old Baldy for sweeping views of the valley

For something a bit more adventurous, try the Wimberley Zipline for a unique perspective of the Hill Country from above.

During warmer months, plan ahead and reserve a swim at Blue Hole or Cypress Falls to cool off in the clear waters of Cypress Creek or the Blanco River.

If a more relaxed pace is calling your name, consider visiting some of the area’s beautiful wineries:

You might also enjoy a scenic drive to nearby towns like Blanco or Gruene for shopping, dining, and time along the river.

Another Evening to Savor

As your second day winds down, return to the Inn in time for another unforgettable sunset.

For dinner, you might explore:

After dinner, head back to the Inn to relax. Watch a movie by the firepit, enjoy a quiet soak in the hot tub, or sip a glass of wine beneath the stars before turning in for another restful night.

Day 3: A Gentle Goodbye

On your final morning, enjoy another delicious breakfast and a little extra time on the porch. With a noon checkout, there’s no need to rush. Take a walk, breathe in the fresh Hill Country air, and savor the last moments of your stay.

On your way home, stop back through town to pick up a few favorite finds. If you enjoy antiques and vintage treasures, Poppi Vernon’s is one of our favorites just before the Square on FM 2325.

As you head home, we hope you’ll carry with you the memories of a relaxing, refreshing weekend—and maybe even start planning your next visit.

We’d Love to Welcome You Back

Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, every stay at the Inn at Sunset Mill Ranch is meant to be a chance to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy the beauty of the Hill Country.
